I’ve got a GREAT new job to show you but it’s under wraps for the moment so all I can show you is some of the old-school animation we produced for it. It was a pleasure to use a pencil again but lordy, i’d forgotten about the neck-ache issues that come from sitting hunched over a light box for hours on end. however, looking at the final result I think it was worth the possible spinal damage. I post the finished thing as soon as I can.
BBC Look East

We’re all very pleased today here in the studio, we have two of our music videos in the BBC Music Video Festival currently being held in Norwich, Alasdair and Jocks video for Clinic called Bubblegum, and Layla and Grigoris’s video for Elbow in which they collaborated with the fantastic Oliver East. What make’s today all the more fun was that Richard our producer got called in to do an interview yesterday, being a Norfolk boy himself, they thought it was appropriate to ask him a few questions, thankfully all about making music videos and what they mean to Trunk. Look at his little face!

The Festival runs till the 1st of October and the BBC have set screens up in 20 Towns and Cities across the UK, take a look. http://bbcmusicvideofestival.tumblr.com/

We’ve just been working with design company OWM&M and web designers Tektonik to create the launch website for engine manufacturer Cummins’ Euro 6 Project. Layla designed the characters and animation for the front page of the site which randomly plays loops of a chameleon and some fish. Animation was by Aaron Lampert. Below you can see Layla’s original chameleon sketch and the character worked up and coloured in flash. You can see the site in action here

The Graham Chapman Project- Update

Here’s a link to a little piece about Trunk by the Graham Chapman Project guys. We’re probably just over halfway through animating our 7 minute section. It’s a LOT of hand drawn animation, so far we’ve gobbled up four animators and 6- yes SIX interns. Yum yum.

We are super excited to reveal our newest project. Trunk Animation has been chosen along with 12 other animation companies to work on “A Liar’s Autobiography” an animated feature film based on the autobiograhy of Monty Python’s Graham Chapman. The film is based on a recently recovered audio cassette of Graham Chapman reading from his autobiography, a script was written based around this tape and the other original members of Monty Python were drafted in to play themselves. The whole film will be made in glorious stereoscopic 3d, this will be a steep learning curve for all involved but we are relishing the prospect of getting our heads around this new technology. You can follow the film blog here. Our section is being directed collaboratively by Jock, Alasdair, Rok and Layla. Jock has been hard at work on designing up the characters and we are working on our animatic. Here are some of Jock’s designs
Elbow | Open Arms

Phew! we’ve just finished making this video for Elbow for their new single”Open Arms”. It’s based on the illustrations of Elbow’s album cover designer Oliver East. The video is based on a loose narrative of Oliver’s depicting an evening in a Manchester Working Man’s Club. Directors Grigoris Leontiades and Layla Atkinson worked closely with Oliver to stay as close to his original vision of the story as possible. We drafted in a team of animators to animate in Oliver’s inimitable style. A particular challenge was animating the distinctive “ribbon people” which Ollie had designed in his original storyboard. Early on we realised the enormity of animating these in 2d so we turned to Trunk’s old friend and ace compositor Steven Azancot who brought flat 2 dimensional ribbons into cinema4d, animated them moving around a 3d space on splines then outputted as 2d elements to be composited with the rest of the dancers. We strove to match Oliver’s illustrative style as closely as we could, we animated on 8fps, added hand painted boiling textures and chromatic aberration to give it as much of a hand-made feeling as possible. It was a long, drawn-out and sometimes painful process with some disgustingly late nights but now it’s over and we can breathe a sigh of relief.
